5. First Time Director: Promotion 101

October 26, 2010

These new-found insights about the craft of drama are interesting, you say, but where the heck is this play going to be performed? And when? Ah, yes—there’s more to it than writing, rehearsing, crafting stage and SFX and music. I’ve been so focussed on those, I’ve all but forgotten that if you want to come see the play, you’ll need to know where to find it.

“Francis and Sophy: A Victorian Romance” will have its world premiere at the Dominican University’s Fringe of Marin November 12 at 7:30. It is an imagined encounter between two historical figures, Captain Francis Crozier and his intended bride Sophy Cracroft in 1845.

She declined his proposal of marriage before he left on a long and dangerous voyage to explore the Arctic wilderness. However, to inspire him she gave him a letter to open in six months, and another a year later, knowing his ship will still be frozen in the ice of the Northwest Passage. When he opens them, will he find she’s reconsidered? Will there be hope for him, or is everything doomed?

“Francis and Sophy” is the first of five one-act plays in Program One at Fringe of Marin 2010 (at Domincan University of California in San Rafael), appearing:
• Friday Nov. 12, 7:30 p.m.
• Sun Nov. 14, 2 p.m.
