2. Second-time Playwright: First Stage Rehearsal

March 26, 2011

I’m glad it’s not me who’s directing “Candle, Rose.” That’s an art and talent that takes years to refine. Steve North’s been at it here at the Fringe and elsewhere for the better part of a decade. He know what to do, how to work with the actors, how to find the essence of a scene and reveal it using only words and motion. Crucial ideas like blocking and timing that are as important as remembered lines and minimal props.

From the first reading, it was clear the actors already understood the roles of Jane, John and Sam., as if Carolyn, Charles, and Byron were these people. From a seat at the back of the empty room I watched them breathe life and drama into the word’s I’d written four months ago, and considered my work done, or nearly so. I must have done something right.

“I must have done something right.” David, Having had the honor to hear “Candle Rose” from its inception, and through its many revisions, I know you did it right and rejoice in that is now alive and well and ready for the world to enjoy, thanks to Steve North and the wonderful actors involved.
    Congratulations to all,
    Camincha
